Why Sleep Training Isn't Working (The "Hardware" vs. "Software" Problem)
You have bought the course. You have the $100 blackout curtains. You have the sound machine set to the exact decibel level recommended by the experts. You are tracking "wake windows" down to the minute.
You are doing everything right. So why won’t your baby sleep?
If you feel like you are failing while everyone else on Instagram is succeeding, we want you to know two things:
You are not failing.
You might be trying to run new Software on crashing Hardware.
At Maximized Chiropractic, we see exhausted parents every day who have perfected the routine but are still struggling with the result. Here is the missing piece of the sleep puzzle that most sleep courses don't talk about.
Why won’t my baby sleep?
Most sleep training programs (like Taking Cara Babies, which we love!) focus on the Software. These are the external habits and environmental cues that signal to a baby that it is time to rest.
The "Software" includes:
The Schedule: Wake windows and nap timing.
The Environment: Pitch black rooms and white noise.
The Routine: Bath, bottle, book, bed.
If your baby is calm, comfortable, and neurologically regulated, this software works like a charm. But what if the computer itself is overheating?
What can I do to get my baby to sleep?
The Hardware is your baby’s actual body and nervous system.
Your baby’s autonomic nervous system has two primary operating modes:
Sympathetic (The Gas Pedal): Fight, Flight, Protection, Stress.
Parasympathetic (The Brake Pedal): Rest, Digest, Growth, Sleep.
For a baby to fall asleep and stay asleep, their internal nervous system must be able to shift from the Gas to the Brake.
Here is the problem: Many babies—due to birth trauma (c-sections, vacuums, or fast labors), tension, or discomfort—get physically stuck in Sympathetic Dominance.
Their internal "Gas Pedal" is jammed to the floor. Their brain is perceiving stress even when they are safe in their crib.
You Cannot Sleep Train a "Stuck" Nervous System
Imagine your computer is frozen and overheating. You can try to click "Open Program" (Sleep Training) as many times as you want, but until you reboot the computer (The Nervous System), the program will not run.
If your baby’s "Hardware" is stuck in fight-or-flight, no amount of rocking, shushing, or scheduling will fix it. They physically cannot calm down.
How can I tell if my baby won’t sleep because they are uncomfortable?
How do you know if your baby is struggling with a "Hardware" issue? Look for these physical signs of tension:
The Arch: They stiffen up and arch their back when frustrated or laid flat.
The Fists: They sleep with tight, clenched fists (a relaxed baby has open hands).
The Tilt: They always prefer looking to one side or struggle to breastfeed on one side.
The "Hate" for the Car Seat: They scream the moment they are buckled in (because the position puts pressure on their spine).
How can chiropractic help my baby sleep?
At Maximized Chiropractic, our goal isn't to give you a new schedule; it's to help your baby’s body process the schedule you already have.
We focus on their entire nervous system. This is the master controller of their body and needs to be working smoothly for them to be calm. Their neck houses the Vagus Nerve, which is the "master brake pedal" for the body. If there is tension here, their brakes can't engage.
We Scan: We use non-invasive INSiGHT Scans to measure exactly how much tension is in your baby’s system.
We Adjust: We use gentle, pediatric-specific adjustments (no cracking, just light pressure) to release that tension.
We Release: Once the tension clears, the "Brake Pedal" engages. The body relaxes. And suddenly, that sleep training course you bought starts working.
