Why am I always constipated? (It’s not just a fiber problem)

If you find yourself reaching for coffee just to stay regular, or if bloating and discomfort have become your "new normal," you're not alone. Constipation is one of the most common digestive complaints in adults, yet most of us are taught to either ignore it or we’re told to "eat more fiber" and wait for it to pass.

But here’s the truth: Constipation isn't always a "poop problem." It’s often a communication problem. It’s your body’s way of telling you that the signals between your brain and your gut are getting lost in translation. When we only treat the symptoms with laxatives or temporary diet shifts, we ignore the underlying reason why the system stalled in the first place.

What lifestyle habits cause constipation?

Before looking at the deeper issues, we must look at lifestyle-induced constipation. The fiber gap is one obvious thing most of us are lacking, as it can be hard to get the recommended 25–30 grams daily, leaving your colon slow and stuck. Dehydration makes it worse because the colon’s job is to absorb water. When we’re dehydrated, our bodies will pull moisture from waste, leaving stools hard and dry. Finally, inactivity plays a role, as physical activity is essential for stimulating the natural contractions of your intestines.

Can hormones and stress cause constipation?

Sometimes, you’re eating all the fiber in the world and drinking gallons of water, but nothing happens. This is where your hormones—our body’s chemical messengers—come into play:

  • Thyroid "Gas Pedal": If your thyroid is underactive (Hypothyroidism), your metabolism slows down. This includes the speed of your digestive tract, leading to chronic sluggishness and chronic constipation.

  • The Progesterone Shift: For many, the week before a menstrual cycle or during pregnancy is when we experience very high levels of progesterone. This hormone relaxes smooth muscles, which unfortunately includes the muscles in your gut. Muscular contraction (peristalsis) is the primary driver for eliminating bowel.

  • Stress and Cortisol: When you’re in "fight or flight" mode, your body produces high levels of cortisol. To save energy for the "threat," your body diverts blood flow away from the digestive system, effectively putting it on pause. When we are in “fight or flight,” our body can’t easily access the parasympathetic tone or “rest and digest”  it requires for elimination.

Can a chiropractor help with constipation?

Many people didn’t know that regular chiropractic care can help with digestion.  The logic and science behind it is simple: Your nervous system controls your gut. When there are misalignments (subluxations) in your lower spine or pelvis, it can interfere with the signals being sent to your intestines.

By adjusting your lumbar spine and sacrum, we can help remove interference from your nerves that control the colon. Adjustments can help shift your body from a "stressed" state into the parasympathetic "rest and digest" state. They can also help remove tension from your pelvic floor muscles and allow for a smoother transition.

What are the best natural supplements for constipation?

When these changes need an extra boost, a combination of Whole Leaf Aloe Vera Juice and Probiotics can be highly effective. Whole leaf aloe juice contains natural compounds that act as a stimulant to the bowel. Think of it like a “natural laxative” that has all of the pros and basically none of the cons! A standard starting point is 1 to 2 teaspoons taken once daily, preferably in the morning or before bed. While some people notice a difference in as little as 2 to 8 hours, it may take a few days of consistent use for your body to find its rhythm.

Probiotics take a different approach by introducing beneficial bacteria to balance the gut microbiome and improve transit time. We recommend a probiotic supplement that contains anywhere from 1 billion to 10 billion CFUs (the number of live bacteria that help to colonize your gut) taken daily at the same time. Because probiotics work by physically changing the environment of your gut, they are a "long game" strategy; you might feel minor shifts in a few days, but it may take anywhere from  4 to 12 weeks of daily use to see a significant, lasting transformation in chronic constipation.

As you introduce these supplements, pay close attention to how your body reacts. It is common to experience some temporary bloating, increased gas, or mild cramping as your internal environment shifts. However, if these symptoms become painful, or if you experience sharp abdominal pain, watery diarrhea, or signs of dehydration, these are signs to slow down or stop. Easing into the dosage allows your digestive tract to adjust without unnecessary distress.

What happens if you don't poop every day?

You might be thinking what is a “normal” amount? A general rule of thumb is that you should have at least one easy-to-pass bowel movement in a 24-hour period. Why? Think of your digestive system like the plumbing in a house. If the waste sits in the pipes too long, things start to get pretty unpleasant—not just in the "pipes" themselves, but throughout the whole house.

Pooping every day is one of your body’s primary ways of maintaining homeostasis (internal balance). Here is why that daily "clearance" is so vital:

  • Hormone Clearing: Your liver dumps excess hormones (like estrogen) into your stool. If you don't poop, your body reabsorbs them, which can cause hormonal imbalances.

  • Toxic Recycling: The longer waste sits, the more your colon reabsorbs metabolic waste products and "old" water into your bloodstream. This is what causes hard and painful bowel movements.

  • Bacterial Balance: Slow transit allows "bad" bacteria and yeast to ferment and overgrow, causing gas and bloating.

  • Structural Health: Daily movements prevent the straining that leads to hemorrhoids and pelvic floor issues.

Here at Maximized, we love to help the full person and make sure that you are on track. The first step is for us to remove neurological interference through our neurologically-focused chiropractic adjustments. Next, we help you analyze your diet to make sure you are hitting your fiber goals, hydrating efficiently, and starting supplements that can help with regularity. Finally, we help get you on the right track with stress management. By shifting you out of “fight or flight” we allow your body to be more at ease in your “rest, digest, and restore” state.

You don't have to manage symptoms for the rest of your life. By addressing the neurological root cause and supporting your system with the right tools, you can stop treating the symptoms and start trusting your body again.

If you're ready to see if a "traffic jam" in your nervous system is holding you back, we’re here to help you get things moving. Let’s get you back to feeling your best!
