“Is It My Fault My Child Has Torticollis?”: Finding Grace and Answers for Your Baby’s Flat Head
If you’ve noticed your baby’s head tilting to one side, or if a flat spot has started to become more obvious, you may be starting to have feelings of doubt and worry going through your head. You may start asking yourself, “Is this my fault?” or, “Did I do something wrong?”
First, we want you to take a deep breath. We see you, we hear you, and we want to tell you right now: No, it is not your fault. Parenting is a journey filled with enough "mom-guilt" as it is. When your child is struggling, you wonder if you missed something, or if you should have done something different. But the truth is, the things that lead to torticollis and flat heads (plagiocephaly) are almost always entirely out of your control. We are here to support you, to empower you with the "why," and to show you how we may be able to help your child heal from the inside out.
Why Does My Baby Have Torticollis?
Torticollis isn't a "parenting fail." It is a physical and neurological condition that often begins long before you ever held your baby in your arms. In many cases, it’s a matter of physics and the environment in which your baby developed.
Think about your baby’s time in the womb. While we like to think of it as a spacious, floating oasis, it can get pretty cramped in there, especially in the third trimester. If your baby spent any amount of time in a transverse position (lying horizontally across the uterus), they were under constant physical pressure.
Imagine you had to spend an entire night sleeping on a couch that was two feet too short for you. To fit, you’d have to wedge your head against one armrest and your feet against the other, tilting your neck at a weird angle just to stay on the cushions. When you finally woke up the next morning, your neck would be stiff, your muscles would be sore, and you’d likely find it impossible to turn your head the other way.
For a baby in a transverse position, they aren't just there for a night; they are there for weeks. One side of their neck muscles becomes chronically stretched, while the other side becomes shortened and tight. By the time they are born, that "tilted" position is the only one their body knows.
Can Birth Trauma Lead to a Flat Head?
Even if your baby had a perfect "head-down" position during pregnancy, the process of entering the world can be incredibly intense. We hear from moms who feel guilty because they needed interventions like forceps, a vacuum, or a C-section.
We want to be very clear: We are not here to blame you for the way your baby was delivered. These interventions are deemed medically necessary for the safety of both you and your child. However, it is important to acknowledge that these procedures aren’t without risk and potential damage. They almost always involve a significant amount of force to your newborns fragile neck and skull.
A vacuum or forceps delivery pulls on the delicate joints of their upper neck, while a C-section involves a quick, forceful lift that pulls the head into a stressed position. These interventions create massive amounts of muscular and neurological stress. While the intervention may have been necessary, the resulting stress on their delicate nervous system is something that needs to be addressed so your baby doesn't stay "stuck" in that neurologically traumatic pattern.
Are There Other Reasons My Baby Was Born With Torticollis?
Other than positioning and birth interventions, there are several other things that are completely out of a parent's hands:
Multiple Births: If you were carrying twins or triplets, the "room" in the womb was even more limited. Crowding is a very common cause of torticollis.
Large Birth Weight: "Big babies" have less room to move and reposition themselves, making them more likely to get stuck in one spot.
Oligohydramnios: This is a fancy word for low amniotic fluid. If there wasn't enough fluid to help your baby "float" and move, they were more likely to be pressed against the uterine wall in a fixed position.
First-Time Pregnancies: Sometimes, the uterine muscles and abdominal walls are tighter during a first pregnancy, providing less "stretch" for the baby to move around.
Again, none of these things are a reflection of your parenting. They are simply the circumstances of your baby's unique beginning.
What Is the Root Cause of Torticollis and Flat Heads?
While the trigger might be a transverse position or a vacuum delivery, the root cause of why the problem persists is found in the nervous system.
When those neck joints get stuck in a weird position, it leads to subluxations; these are misalignments that interfere with the nervous system communication between the brain and the body. If the nervous system is under constant stress, it keeps the neck muscles in a state of high tension.
This interference is what keeps your baby from being able to turn their head. And as we discussed in our other blog, "How to Fix Your Baby’s Flat Head and Torticollis Naturally (Without and Helmet)," this stress directly impacts the flow of Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) and the symmetrical growth of the skull.
Should I "Wait and See" if My Baby’s Head Rounds Out?
This is the most frustrating piece of advice parents receive. The "wait and see" approach usually leads to them getting worse.
If a baby has torticollis and can't turn their head, they will naturally lay on the same spot on the back of their head every single time they are on their back. Because their skull is soft and growing rapidly, that constant pressure on one spot causes it to flatten further. The more it flattens, the more the baby "rolls" into that flat spot, creating a vicious cycle.
If we don't correct the underlying neurological interference, the "wait and see" method isn't just passive, it can harm your baby’s progress.
How Can Pediatric Chiropractic Help My Baby?
We focus on the root cause of these issues, a nervous system under stress. By using gentle, specific adjustments to clear those subluxations, we remove the interference. When the "power" is turned back on, your baby’s brain can finally realize, "Oh! These muscles are way too tight," and send the signal to relax.
We are empowering your child’s body to do exactly what it was designed to do, adapt, heal, and thrive naturally. When their nervous system is clear, their muscles relax, their head can turn, and their skull can grow symmetrically from the inside out. Besides all that, their nervous system controls all of the other things in their body! Again we are not just treating your child’s torticollis and flat head, we are promoting nervous system function, which can improve sleep, digestion, immune function, breathing, and so much more!
