Why Chiropractic Care Is Still Essential After Ear Tubes
If you are reading this, you have likely been through the emotional ringer. You’ve endured the restless nights, the endless rounds of antibiotics, the tears, and the heartbreak of watching your child suffer from chronic ear infections. Making the decision to move forward with ear tube surgery wasn't easy, but you did it because you listened to your intuition as a parent and knew it was the right next step for your child. You are a good parent, and I am proud of you for listening to your inner voice and doing what you believe is right.
While tubes can offer your child immediate relief by physically releasing trapped pressure, you might be surprised when colds, congestion, or even fluid issues pop back up down the road.
Here is the truth that I want you to know: Ear tubes are a temporary bypass, not a permanent fix. They manage the symptoms, but they do not address why your child's body was struggling to drain their ear in the first place and were constantly dealing with infections.
Why Does My Child Still Get Congested After Ear Tube Surgery?
To truly heal, we have to look past the ear canal and look at the "plumbing."
Ear infections are rarely just an "infection" or a "germ" problem; they are a drainage problem. In a healthy body, the Eustachian tube acts as a natural drain, carrying fluid from behind the eardrum down into the back of the throat. When that fluid drains freely, bacteria and viruses cannot settle in and multiply.
Why does the Eustachian tube get blocked?
It comes down to the tiny muscles surrounding that tube, which are controlled directly by your child’s nervous system. If their muscles are locked in chronic tension, the Eustachian tube gets clamped shut. Fluid backs up, pressure builds, bacteria and viruses flourish, and pain sets in.
Placing a surgical tube into the eardrum creates an artificial exit point for the fluid, but does not address the underlying neurological stress and muscular tension.
What Is the Root Cause of Fluid Build-Up in My Child's Ears?
If the nervous system controls those muscles, what is causing them to lock up? The answer is what we call a subluxation.
A subluxation occurs when the tiny joints in the spine, especially in the delicate upper neck, become misaligned or lose their proper motion. This creates interference in the communication highway between their brain and body.
When subluxations are present, your child’s body gets stuck in a state of Fight or Flight (the sympathetic nervous system). In this stressed state:
Muscles in the neck and head pull tight, physically blocking their Eustachian tubes.
Your child's body struggles to fully access their natural "Rest, Digest, and Heal" pathways (the parasympathetic system).
The immune system becomes sluggish, making it harder for your child to fight off routine colds.
Until the subluxations in your child’s neck are corrected, their brain and body cannot communicate at 100%, and the root cause of their drainage problems and infections remains.
Could My Child's Ear Infections Be Connected to Their Birth?
Where does upper neck stress usually begin? For most kids, it starts on day one.
Even the most natural, beautiful birth involves a tremendous amount of physical pressure, rotation, and pulling on a newborn's fragile head and neck. Interventions like epidurals, pitocin, vacuum extraction, or C-sections increase that physical stress exponentially.
This initial strain creates the first subluxation in your baby’s neck, setting off what we pediatric chiropractors call "The Perfect Storm."
It often starts with an extra fussy infant who struggles with nursing, colic, or reflux. As they grow, that locked-in neurological stress prevents their ears from draining properly, leading to chronic ear infections and heavy colds. If left uncorrected, this same underlying nervous system stress can follow them into childhood, contributing to sensory challenges, sleep struggles, and focus issues down the road.
How Can Chiropractic Care Support My Child's Health Long-Term?
Our goal for your child goes far beyond pain management or getting through the next cold season. We want to see your child adapt to the normal stresses of life, build a resilient immune system, and grow up active, healthy, happy, and thriving.
You don't have to just wait and hope the ear infections don't come back. By addressing the root cause, you are giving your child's body the clear communication it needs to heal from the inside out.
