Can chiropractic help with your child's allergies?

Pediatric chiropractic adjustment

Spring is in the air! For some of us that means fresh air, stopping to smell the flowers, and letting the kids play outside after being stuck indoors for so long. For other parents, the season is less enjoyable as it brings feelings of a head full of fluid that leaks out of every opening it can find (eyes, ears, nose…you name it!) while you spend most of the time chasing the kids with a tissue that may or may not have already been used. Runny nose, itchy and watery eyes and intense sinus pressure are just a few symptoms that kids with allergies experience. How is it that some children react in a negative way to what should be naturally good for us?

You may have been told that you or your child has seasonal allergies, or you may have heard the terms sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, hypersensitivity reaction and Hay Fever…all fancy words for seasonal allergies. An allergic reaction is an overreaction to a substance that has entered the body and is flagged as potentially harmful. Some of the most common substances include pollen, grass, dust mites, mold and a variety of weeds. When these allergens enter the body, our immune system goes into full defense mode by sending out compounds called histamines. The histamines gather around the allergen, increase blood in the area and the cells around the substance fill with fluid. This would explain the swelling, redness and increase fluids that are causing your head to feel like a hot air balloon ready for lift off. Our immune system then kicks into gear and starts producing symptoms that help rid the body of the allergen…hence the sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, etc.

At this point you’re probably thinking, “Chiropractors care for the brain and spine, why are you telling me this?” While our focus is to take care of your nervous system, it just so happens that the nervous system and immune system are directly related! The nervous system controls EVERYTHING your body does. It tells your heart to beat, your intestines to digest the donut you ate this morning and your immune system to fight foreign substances. Misalignments in the body, especially in the upper neck, cause interference between the brain and body which affects our ability to react to stress. These misalignments in your child can be caused by one of the hundreds of ways they hurt themselves like banging their heads, falling on the ground, tripping over sticks, you name it and are often unnoticed because they do not always cause traditional symptoms like pain. Therefore, when the nerves controlling the immune system are not working well due to spinal misalignment or subluxation, the immune system cannot do its job to fight off allergens. For example, the adrenal glands are supplied directly by spinal nerves and their job is to produce an anti-inflammatory hormone. If the nerve sending signals to the adrenal glands is irritated, the glands will produce minimal amounts of the hormone and the body has to work harder to fight on its own.

Chiropractic care removes the interference to the way our immune system is supposed to work. Our gentle adjustments are safe for all ages so that we can care for the whole family during the allergy season. We are trained in techniques that help to relieve sinus pressure, promote lymphatic fluid flow, and support the respiratory system. Chiropractic care is a natural, powerful option to boost your immune system and allow your body to do the job it was created to do! If you are looking for an option other than drugs, give us a call!
